Becoming a Fairtrade Town

Fairtrade supporters across the country have joined together to make their town, city, village, island, borough, county, zone, district or region a Fairtrade town and to make a commitment to supporting Fairtrade and using licensed products with the FAIRTRADE Mark.

Why become a Fairtrade Town?

Fairtrade Towns aim to encourage people and organisations use their everyday choices to increase sales of Fair Trade products to bring about positive change for farmers and workers in developing countries.

We can all make a difference by supporting trade that works for development each time we shop. A Fair Trade Town builds on what we as individuals can do by bringing people together to send a collective message.

How to become a Fairtrade Town

There are five goals which must be met for a place to become a Fairtrade Town which must be developed to maintain Fairtrade status. The goals are designed to ensure as many people as possible can get involved and a Fairtrade Town needs everyone to play their part – from the local authority to cafés, businesses to schools, local newspapers to community groups.
Mossley’s Fairtrade Town Journey
The campaign for Fairtrade Mossley began in Autumn 2009 with an approach from several town councillors. In November Mossley Town Council passed a resolution supporting Fairtrade.

Since then volunteers have been busy raising the profile of Fairtrade particularly with shops, cafes, workplaces and schools and churches. By June 2011 all the targets for the Five Goals had been met and the application to become a Fairtrade Town was submitted.
